Above are a 40W GLS lamp (domestic light bulb) and a 9W CF lamp (energy saving lamp). The one on the left takes more than 4x as much energy, gives out less light and lasts about one fifth as long as the one on the right. At the end of the life of the CF lamp, it will have cost ¼ of the cost of the GLS lamp to run, including the cost of the lamp.
